Questions frequently come up about plans or designs for solar melters. I made mine to fit the pan I already had. The box is 1 x 8 lumber with a plywood bottom. I made it just wide enough to fit the baking pan and about 6 inches longer. It has wood ribs on the sides and a cross bar to hold the pan. The pan sits 3 inches above the cake pan. I drilled 5, 1/8 inch holes in the bottom corner at one end of the pan. A 9 inch cake pan sits below the holes. The clear lid is made of Lexan, you could use glass or plexiglass, I just had the Lexan handy. I Put a short piece of 4x4 lumber under the top end and place in the back yard. I live in Florida and I've melted wax in November with this set up. In the summer, June - August, I can put in comb, close the lid, and watch it melt. I like the solar melter because I can just throw wax in there and walk away. The hulls will stay in the pan and most of the debris. There is still some dirt, pollen and other small stuff. I remelt the wax in an old crock pot I got from Goodwill for $3 with 1-2 inches of water. The small stuff will collect on the bottom of the chunk and I can scrape it off.
